Qualifications & Competencies

- Higher School Certificate with Maths and Physics at Principal Level;
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or higher
- Vocational Preparation: 4 year full-time course;

Roles and Responsibilities

- Receives preliminary plan of structure to be constructed from Architect;
- Calculates from plan, size and quantity of steel rods to be used in strip-footings, columns, girdles, beams, stairs and slab roofing;
- Prepares working drawings to represent armature for different structures;
- Estimates quantity of respective size steel rods to be used for whole project in view;
- Prepares work schedules and task force allocating time factor for completion of work and submits to Contracts Manager;
- Verifies foundation after digging work to ascertain specified depth and firm ground, requests for compaction if necessary;
- Supervises laying of armature at different stages before casting of concrete to ensure correct size, number and attachment of steel rods. Takes remedial action if any.
- Provides technical guidance where necessary to increase productivity;
- Verifies and notes results of concrete tests made by laboratory in respective book to ascertain right concrete used in various castings;
- Examines concreting of roof slab to assure of right thickness of concrete;
- Attends meetings with Contracts Manager, Site Manager, General Foreman and other consultants when required;
- Checks, plans, organises and supervises maintenance and repair works on existing structures.

Experience

- 2 years on-the-job training; should be registered with the Council of Professional Engineers.
